Few things on Earth are as miraculous and vital as seeds. Worshipped and treasured since the dawn of humankind. SEED: The Untold Story follows passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000 year-old food legacy. In the last century, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. In a harrowing and heartening story, these reluctant heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds. SEED features Vandana Shiva, Dr. Jane Goodall, Andrew Kimbrell, Winona Laduke and Raj Patel.

About the Host:

Jill Wagner is the director of the Hawaii Island Seed Bank.  The seed bank stores native seeds for many partners who are doing restoration on Hawaii Island.  It is currently working on a project called, “Ohia Love” which was initiated by the Lyon Arboretum Seed Lab.  Each Island Seed Bank is collecting and saving Ohia seeds due to the serious and sad reality of Rapid Ohia Death.  Those seeds can be used for future propagation.  The seed bank is doing a project with the largest Native seed bank in the world, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Millennium Seed Bank, in England.  The project called, The Global Tree Seed Project, focuses on collections of native tree species.  Half of the collections are held at the Hawaii Island Seed Bank and the other half will be safeguarded at the Millennium Seed Bank as a back up.  The Hawaii Island Seed Bank also has an on-going program with the Kohala Center, Hawaii Public Seed Initiative, to sell locally adapted and grown vegetable seeds from farmers throughout the State.

Ms. Wagner will talk about the Hawaii Island Seed Bank and what the community can do to support seed banking in Hawaii.
