Class description: This specialized class is designed for students seeking to perfect their foundation skills and explore new techniques in the metals studio. The curriculum for this course will be built around the interests of the students enrolled, so come to the first class with projects, techniques and/or topics in mind. Students will have the experience of a professional metalsmith to guide them through an ambitious piece, starting a production line, or even setting up a home studio.  All tools and equipment at your disposal, along with demonstrations from your instructor as needed.  Prerequisite: Jewelry/Metalsmithing I or equivalent. Tuition includes access to an open studio for five hours per week (volunteer assistant schedule depending).

Instructor bio: After a dart thrown at a map and 20 years in Portland, Oregon, Kristin Mitsu Shiga moved to the Big Island to become a more permanent part of our creative community in 2017. She has been teaching metalsmithing, enameling, book arts, and mindfulness practice around the world since 1992. Kristin has shown her work internationally, and is included in several notable collections, including the Kamm Artful Teapot Collection and the Permanent Collection of the White House.
