Full Description: In connection with the theme of ‘exploration’ students in this course will explore the idea of self, family, community and world through the creation of art. Students will work in a variety of media and investigate the creative process that lead to authentic work while focussing on the importance and responsibility of recycling materials in their creations.

Students will explore different art mediums and techniques with our DMAC teaching artists such as drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and printmaking. Please bring a sketchbook, wear proper attire for art making, a healthy snack and something to drink! Footwear is required.

Parents may drop off their child in the lower parking lot by DMAC’s Ceramic department and escort their child to the Youth Studio above the lawn.  All payments and registration forms must be fill out and turned into the front desk prior to the first day. All classes will happen in our Youth Studio. All students must check out with the teaching artist before leaving with an adult.

Short Bio:

Gerald Walsh is an emerging printmaker who under the guidance of Hiroki Morinoue has come to teach as well as learn printmaking techniques in various fields.  His work explores patterns in both the organic and geometric sense as they embody images in relation to the human figure. Gerald’s prints have been shown in numerous exhibits at Donkey Mill as well as the Annual Japanese Chamber of Commerce Exhibit in Oahu. Gerald was a full time teacher at Makua Lani Christian Academy where he taught art from Kindergarten through 7th grade.  He is currently focusing on his own printmaking and is working for Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary. Gerald has taught at DMAC since 2015.

Akiko Cutlip was born and raised in Japan. She received her BA in fine arts from the California State University in 1998 with a focus in Drawing and Painting. Since then, Akiko has taught art in both private and public schools. For the last 15 years, she has been dedicated to providing arts education to  grades K - 5 after-school art programs in the San Francisco Bay area. Akiko’s Japanese cultural background and heritage serve as a large influence in her own work and in teaching. She enjoys connecting meaningful ideas around culture and the arts when exploring art techniques and concepts with her students.  This is Akiko’s second year teaching with the Donkey Mill Art Center.
